Century/LIFT Tutoring Program Designated as “No Child Left Behind” Provider

Los Angeles, CA — Century/Learning Initiatives For Today® (Century/LIFT®), an at-risk youth after-school tutoring program with sites located in and near affordable housing communities, has been designated by the State of California as a No Child Left Behind Title I Supplemental Educational Service provider. This will entitle Century/LIFT to Federal funds earmarked for the NCLB program.

“Century Housing can now expand our commitment to providing educational enrichment to the children of low-income families,” said G. Allan Kingston, President & CEO of Century Housing, which provided initial funding for Century/LIFT.

“Century/LIFT will still offer homework assistance, language support, math literacy support, algebra-readiness support, and enrichment activities. However, this new designation means that more families can take advantage of our program and more schools will have another choice to refer needy families,” said Century/LIFT program director Cynthia Amos, who also has more than 15 years of experience as a public school teacher.

“With the monies from NCLB, Century/LIFT can serve more children and work closer with public schools to ensure a seamless transition from the regular school day to a quality supplemental afterschool program,” said Amos.

Since 1998, Century/Learning Initiatives for Today (Century/LIFT) has operated tutoring centers free of charge to families who live in and near low and moderate-income affordable housing communities in Los Angeles County. Trained professionals tutor students in grades 1 through 12 in homework assistance, reading comprehension, mathematics, computers and technology. Two independent studies performed by The University of Southern California (USC) found that Century/LIFT students made statistically significant improvements in their grades, test scores, and basic skills by participating in Century/LIFT.

Century/Learning Initiatives For Today is a nonprofit partnership among Century Housing, James A. Foshay Learning Center in the Los Angeles Unified School District, DanBerg Development, and USC. Initial financial support came from a generous seed grant from Century Housing. Other program supporters include The Weingart Foundation, The California Community Foundation, The Eisner Foundation, Ahmanson Foundation, Wells Fargo Foundation and Citibank.
